LaBrousse

In Mahajanga, ADES has been working with LaBrousse since the end of 2020. LaBrousse grows mainly indigenous tree species and fruit trees on 35 hectares of bush land. In addition to growing papaya, the cultivation of cashew, lemons and mangoes is being tested. The plantations include precious woods such as mahogany or acacia species, which, among other things, cover the own need for firewood. Bamboo is being tested as a biomass supplier and soil protection plant, and thorn trees as border planting to keep grazing cattle away from the fruit trees. Trees whose leaves are to be used as cattle feed are also being tested. Three wells and two water towers ensure that the trees can be watered during dry periods, so that planting here can be done with manageable risk.

NGO Santatra

In Farafangana, ADES works together with the NGO Santatra, which works with farming families in the villages around Farafangana. Poverty reduction is a key factor here to prevent the overexploitation of forests. They therefore rely on agroforestry and also integrate coffee bushes into the plantations to improve the families' incomes. Harvesting, drying and processing coffee can generate significant income for the workers. The Farafangana region was hit hard by tropical cyclones in 2022. These not only severely damaged villages but also forests and devastated the nursery. ADES continues to support the project, which is currently planting up to a thousand trees a day.
