Solar and energy-efficient cookers

Sustainably effective for Madagascar

Solar and energy-efficient cookers

A Malagasy household consumes four to six tonnes of wood a year by cooking on an open fire. This is where ADES comes in with solar and energy-saving cookers. Depending on the model, energy-saving cooking stoves save 50 to 70 percent of the fuel. With solar cookers, cooking is emission-free, except for the production materials. ADES has been committed to energy-efficient cooking in Madagascar for 20 years. During this time, ADES has built up its own production and distribution infrastructure, with which ADES now reaches almost the entire island.

Leave no one behind

In the catchment area of the regional centres, ADES raises awareness of the benefits and use of energy-efficient cookers as well as climate and environmental protection. ADES is frequently present at local events and markets as well as in the media to encourage the population to protect the environment and natural resources.

With a total of 13 locations across the island, a network of over 250 independent resellers and awareness-raising measures by specially trained teams, ADES reaches large sections of the Malagasy population. ADES deliberately focuses not only on the large cities, where ADES can sell the most with relatively little effort. In special programmes, ADES specifically targets the poorest sections of the population and offers them access to clean cooking solutions. In this way, ADES is putting the central promise of the Sustainable Development Goals (leave no one behind) into practice.

Production on site

The focus of production is on energy-saving cooking stoves for wood and charcoal. Schools, restaurants, canteens and hospitals in particular also rely on solar cookers and parabol-solarcookers. Production is constantly being made more effective and resource-saving. The Fianarantsoa regional centre, for example, produces our cooking stoves in a semi-industrial way in a consistently high quantity with higher quality at the same time. By using raw materials more efficiently, waste can be reduced and costs saved. There is a demand for different cooker models in different regions and for different uses. Today, ADES produces a wide range of products.

As part of its awareness-raising work, ADES also offers locally produced solar cooker models in Switzerland.

Madame Soanalimbe'e

Madame Soanalimbe'e, owner of the street restaurant in Fianarantsoa:

"My ADES cooker significantly reduces my expenses when buying coal and allows me to increase my income. I want to buy another bigger ADES cooker once I have saved enough in a few months."

Institutional kitchens

Savings of 85 percent

ADES designs and builds institutional large-scale kitchens for schools, homes and other institutions. The focus is on the development and installation of a modular system for combining solar energy and energy-efficient cooking cookers (ICS) as part of an improved kitchen concept for social institutions such as schools or hospitals. In each case, the concept covers everything from wood storage, staff training, kitchen infrastructure conversion to hot water supply.

Goals

The main objective of this project is to develop and install a modular system for combining solar energy and energy-efficient cooking stoves (ICS) as part of an improved kitchen concept for social institutions such as schools or hospitals. This is intended to achieve various effects:

  • Reduction of fuel consumption by at least 80 %
  • Reduction of harmful air pollution in the kitchen
  • Reduction of climate-damaging CO2 emissions
  • Improvement of the financial situation and thus the improvement of the nutritional situation at the participating organisations

Madame Serena, cook École des Saphirs

Madame Serena

"Three of us cook lunch for over 500 children. Before the kitchen was rebuilt, we needed 200 kg of wood per day and had to cook for 7 hours. With the new kitchen, it is only 30 kg of wood per day and all the rice is in the "Miracle Box" ready in 3 hours! There is also much less smoke. We are very satified." miraculeuse ready in 3 hours! There is much less smoke, we are very satisfied."

Cooking stove models Madagascar

Energy-saving cooking stoves (ICS)

The energy-saving cookers offer a weather-independent alternative for resource-saving, clean cooking at any time of day.

The energy-saving cooking stoves we have developed reduce the consumption of wood and charcoal by 50 to 70 percent. The cookers consist of a combustion chamber made of fired clay, a grate made of metal or clay and a tinplate casing. All components are manufactured in Madagascar.

We offer the cooking stoves in two versions: "OLI-b" for operation with wood and "OLI-c" for operation with charcoal. Likewise, the cookers are available for three pan sizes: 28, 45 and 60 cm.

Parabolic solar cooker

This solar cooker variant consists of a parabolic reflector in whose focal point the cookware is placed. The parabolic mirrors are made of weather-resistant high-gloss aluminium, the frame is made of galvanised steel. ADES builds the parabolic solar cookers in its own metal workshop in the centre of Toliara.

Solar cooker

Solar cooking boxes enable emission-free cooking with solar power. Solar radiation is absorbed by the black interior and also by the cooking pots and converted into heat. Temperatures of up to 150 degrees are generated in the boxes. Solar cookers are suitable for cooking, simmering, baking, preserving fruit and drying.

Solar cooker Switzerland

ADES and the Sommer Holzwerkstatt produce Swiss solar cooker models in cooperation with the institution Einstieg in die Berufswelt. The final production is carried out by young people, who in this way acquire qualifications for taking up a vocational apprenticeship.

The parts of the kit are all prepared in such a way that they can be easily assembled with the help of the enclosed assembly instructions. Normal hand tools are required. ADES solar cookers are available in two sizes and various options. It can be ordered as a kit or in final form. Further information and prices can be found in our brochure.
